HISTORY OF SLHS WINTER GUARD
The San Leandro High School Winter Guard has a rich history rooted in the school's passion for music, dance, and artistic expression. Initially formed as an extension of the school's marching band program, the Winter Guard evolved into its own entity, providing students with the opportunity to explore the intricate blend of performance, storytelling, and athleticism.
In its debut season with the California Color Guard Circuit (CCGC), the San Leandro High School Winter Guard made its mark on the competitive stage. Under the leadership of head instructor Douglas Slocum, and lead by former guard co-captains: Kacie Sengmany and Tatiana Hernandez, the team embraced the values of teamwork, discipline, and creative expression that are core to the guard’s mission. The debut season was a milestone, filled with growth, challenges, and memorable performances that highlighted the students' dedication and talent.
The team’s participation in CCGC showcased their ability to adapt to the higher level of competition while maintaining a focus on personal and group development. With routines that captured the imagination of audiences and judges alike, the San Leandro High School Winter Guard quickly earned recognition for their innovative use of choreography, flag and rifle work, and artistic interpretations of music.
Despite being new to the circuit, the Winter Guard thrived, demonstrating their resilience and commitment to excellence. Their debut season not only set the foundation for future successes but also cemented their place within the CCGC community as a group of talented young performers ready to make their mark in the world of competitive color guard.
